1. In which part to stay in Rome?
Main places to see. If you do not know in which area of Rome to choose your hotel, the best solution is then to take accommodation convenient for visits. In our blog post What to visit in Rome?, we can clearly see where the main places to see are concentrated, as well as the less touristic places, but just as interesting to discover.
Reference point for searches. You can take the Pantheon as the most central point for your search for hotels to stay in Rome. It is clearly located in the middle, equidistant from everything. Other neighborhoods also remain interesting, but for other reasons.
The best area, if you want to optimize your trip, is the Pantheon area (see map below). This district corresponds to the heart of the historic center of Rome, Centro Storico in Italian. On the other hand, the prices in this district are higher, and it is a very touristic district.
2. Map of the best areas to stay in Rome
Discover below more information on these 5 best areas to stay in Rome during a trip. Each neighborhood has its own vibe, pros and cons. So, even if you are staying in the most central area of Rome, it is always interesting to discover other areas of the city.
3. Best neighborhoods to stay in Rome (and areas to avoid)
In which area to stay in Rome? Here are the 5 main neighborhoods to stay in when visiting Rome. Among the central districts of Rome, it can be said that the Pantheon district is the most expensive area to stay in Rome, and the Termini district is the cheapest.
3.1 Pantheon, the heart of the historic center of Rome
Here, we mainly find the small cobbled streets, the baroque churches in all directions, as well as the must-sees such as the Trevi Fountain and the Pantheon. Moreover, this is one of the most touristic areas of Rome. Prices are higher than in other areas of the city. Pantheon is one of the best areas to stay in Rome, but also the most touristy.
Little Queen Pantheon: a very nice place to stay in Rome in the most central district, the Pantheon district. A few minutes walk from the Trevi Fountain, this hotel offers an excellent location for visiting Rome.
Navona Open Space Aparthotel: well equipped this apartment is 60m2 is located just 5 minutes walk from the Castle of Sant’Angelo and 15 minutes from the Pantheon. A great place where to stay in Rome!
3.2 The Vatican or the areas around the City-State
Certainly, it is the most convenient area to visit the Vatican and monuments such as St. Peter’s Basilica or the Sistine Chapel (tips for visiting). The pace here is calmer and more relaxed than in the Pantheon area. However, it is a less practical area for other visits such as, for example, the Colosseum, where it will then be necessary to plan at least 30 minutes by bus to get there.
Eccelso Hotel: with lower rates than in the Pantheon district, this hotel is well located for visiting the Vatican, Castel Sant’Angelo, but also other must-see places in Rome by simply crossing the Tiber River. A great alternative to the Panthéon district!
3.3 Colosseum, the ancient quarter of Rome
The huge advantage is to be closer to the Roman Forum and the Colosseum (read our blog post: Tips for visiting the Colosseum in Rome). If you choose this area to stay in Rome, our advice is not to stray too far from the Colosseum and the reference point which remains the Pantheon. The Colosseum area is one of the best places where to stay in Rome Italy, but not all the area is great to book an accommodation.
Madonna de’ Monti Suites: a stone’s throw from the Roman Forum and the Colosseum, this is a very good place to visit Rome on foot.
Darlin 30 Suite Roma Monti: it is a nice 60m2 apartment with a bedroom, a living room and an equipped kitchen, located near the Cavour metro station in Rome. A larger apartment (two bedrooms) and also close to the Colosseum is LIVING COLOSSEUM.
Areas to avoid in Rome. For example, towards the Basilica of the Holy Cross of Jerusalem, the area is not great. The Parco Del Colle Oppio park, right next to the Colosseum, is not very nice either. On the other hand, the area around the Cavour metro station is very pleasant.
3.4 Trastevere, the new cool area to stay in Rome
This district is increasingly frequented by tourists: small cobbled streets, a village atmosphere. It attracts for its lively and more authentic side. In addition, the Trastevere district partly runs along the quays of the Tiber river. Even if poorly developed, the quays of the Tiber are rather pretty and pleasant for a walk thanks in particular to the bridges and the large trees which border them.
Tree Charme: here you will find elegant rooms located not far from the banks of the Tiber. A terrace in an interior courtyard also awaits you on site. This is a very good place to stay in Rome in the Trastevere district.
Vicolo del Cinque apartment: a 75m2 apartment with two bedrooms, perfect for visiting Rome with the family.
Like the Vatican, Trastevere is on the other side of the Tiber. You will therefore, of course, stay in a more authentic neighborhood, but you will be further from the main places to visit in Rome. Globally, the Trastevere area is one of the best places to stay in Rome.
3.5 Termini, the Termini station district in Rome
This area is therefore very convenient for airport transfer from Fiuminico airport by train or bus (find out more in our blog post: how to get to Rome center city from the airport?). Shuttle buses and the Leonardo Express train stop here. This saves time, effort and money on arrival and departure. This is the cheapest downtown area. On the other hand, it has less charm than the districts of Pantheon or Trastevere, but remains a pleasant district to discover in Rome.
Hotel Virgilio: 5 minutes walk from the train station, but also 10 minutes walk from the Roman Forum, this hotel is a good place to stay in Rome as a couple or with the family.

6. Getting from the airport to the city center
There are several solutions to get from the airport to the city center of Rome: train, bus, taxi or airport transfer booked in advance. In addition, some hotels offer an airport transfer service. On the other hand, be careful, check that it is a private transfer, if you do not want to wait at the airport. Sometimes, when the hotel takes care of the transfer, it groups several travelers. It therefore sometimes happens that we wait for the flights of other people to leave.
- You will need at least 1 hour to go from Fiumicino airport to Rome city center by train or shared shuttle. And less than an hour with a taxi.

7. In which area to stay in Rome with good value for money?
In which district to choose your hotel where to stay in Rome? Here are the main selection criteria.
Best area. As we saw above, the most central district, but also the most expensive, is the Panthéon district. It is here that there are many monuments to visit in Rome. It is also the most expensive district. The neighborhoods on the other side of the Tiber are a good option to find a cheap accommodation in Rome.
Comfort. Objective: sleep well and start the day of the visit in great shape! Comfort is just as important as price.
Rates. Hotel rates may vary throughout the year. It is difficult to go below 100 euros without reducing the level of comfort too much, except during the low tourist season. If you are looking for a central location with affordable prices, look towards Termini station instead.
Breakfast. It is very convenient to have breakfast at the hotel. So that’s one of the important criteria. However, if this is not possible, it is not a problem, because in Rome there are quite a few small cafes where you can have a quick breakfast. And that forces us to leave the hotel earlier.
7.1 Other nice places where to stay in the center of Rome
The main difficulty of the historic center is to have sufficiently well insulated housing. Indeed, this is one of the main drawbacks of the former. Here are two other hotels where to stay in Rome for couples or with family.
7.2 Hotels where to stay in Rome near the Colosseum
The micro-district around Metro Cavour is very friendly. This corner is one of the neighborhoods where you can choose your hotel in Rome with your eyes closed.
Rome is one of the most visited cities in Europe. The choice of accommodation is very wide, and it is therefore quite difficult to choose the right hotel in Rome.
