1. TOP 6 best things to do in Mykonos
What to do in Mykonos? Here is the TOP 6 of the must-sees to enjoy your trip to one of the most visited islands of the Cyclades Mykonos.
Good to know! Chora is the main town of Mykonos. This is where the main and unmissable places to visit on the island are. There are several interesting beaches on the island of Mykonos: some are quite close to Chora, others further away (see below). As Mykonos is a relatively small island, one can quickly move around the island. To give you an idea of the distances, allow 40 minutes to go from one end of the island to the other by car.
1.1 Getting lost in the small streets of Chora
This is clearly one of the must-do activities in Mykonos! The pretty alleys of the Chora are charming and will leave you with very good memories of your trip… but not necessarily in high tourist season!
Little advice. Indeed, if you are going to visit Mykonos in July or August, the narrow streets of the town of Chora are not necessarily the most pleasant: there are far too many people. So, if you have chosen this period to visit Mykonos, favor morning walks in the streets of Chora, when there are still few people.
1.2 Visiting Little Venice
The Little Venice is one of the most famous areas of the Chora. It was built by the Venetians during the 18th century, hence its name. This area literally meets the waves and the sea. It is impressive! Visiting Little Venice is one of the best things to do in Mykonos Island.
1.3 Admiring a beautiful sunset over the sea and visiting the Church of Paraportiani
What to do in Mykonos? Visit the Church of Paraportiani! It is one of the most beautiful churches in Mykonos, but also the oldest. Here, we discover the peaceful side of the island, and we can also admire a beautiful sunset.
Nice place to stay next to the Paraportiani Church: Sunset Paraportiani Rooms. This hotel offers double rooms with a view of the Aegean Sea! Very beautiful sunsets await you on site. The location is very good for visiting the essentials of Mykonos on foot.
1.4 Enjoying the beaches of Mykonos and its crystal clear waters
Which beaches to visit in Mykonos? Among the best known beaches there are:
- Paradise Beach, Super Paradise Beach, Paraga: festive atmosphere
- Ornos Beach: rather family-friendly
- Platis Gialos and Elia: relaxation
Different atmospheres. The concentration of accommodation on Mykonos is in its capital – Chora. However, there is also choice away from the capital of the island, and precisely near the beaches or directly at the edge of the water. 1.5 Visiting Mykonos by catamaran or private boat
In order to enjoy the sea even more, one can take a private boat to visit Mykonos from the waters. This is a great opportunity to spend some great vacation time!
Mykonos is known for its spectacular sunsets. In high season, the most touristic viewpoints are not the most comfortable. And it is directly from the sea that we most appreciate the sunsets in Mykonos. Book a cruise in Mykonos to mark your trip (see photos and prices): it is certainly one of the memories that will mark you the most! That is definitely one of the best things to do in Mykonos!
1.6 Taking a picture of the windmills of Mykonos
What to do in Mykonos? Take a picture with its famous windmills! It is one of the must-see places when visiting Mykonos. On the other hand, you should know that it is also rather touristy. The morning visit is highly recommended.
2. Visit Mykonos differently
Mykonos is a popular destination for tourists from all over the world. It can be difficult to fully experience the soul of Mykonos, especially in July or August when the island is crowded. So, how to discover the more unusual and less touristy Mykonos?
In order to visit Mykonos differently, a visit with a local guide is ideal! You can see the most hidden and authentic places of Mykonos. Find the photos and the presentation of the visit here: visit Mykonos off the beaten track.
3. Where to stay to visit Mykonos
To sleep well. Partying is cool, but not for everyone and not all night long. Right in the center of Chora, you can hear the music until late at night. Therefore, if you want to spend a quieter night and sleep, it is better to move away from the tourist center of Chora.
Romantic stay. If you are going to visit Mykonos as a couple, one of the best addresses with sea views and a private pool or jacuzzi is Mykonos Earth Suites. Very well located, this hotel has a terrace, an outdoor swimming pool and a garden. A very nice stay in perspective!
A little further away from downtown Chora. The Elena Hotel Mykonos is a hotel with good value for money. Some rooms have a sea view.
Idyllic setting to relax. Just 100 meters from Elia Beach, away from the tourist center of the island, Myconian Utopia Relais & Chateaux is an exceptional place to visit and spend an unforgettable holiday in Mykonos. A private beach, two swimming pools, open rooms and terraces with breathtaking views, a spa and a wellness center!
4. Nice places where to eat and go out in Mykonos
- Kastro’s Restaurant: a nice restaurant with a sea view! Idyllic place for a romantic dinner in Mykonos. Here you will find dishes from Greek cuisine, but also from world cuisine. Reserve your table in advance.
- Pepper Souvlaki & More: located in one of the city’s alleys, this restaurant is a good place to take a lunch break in the shade.

Excursions with transportation included. This is the simplest solution! No need to drive yourself, you can enjoy Mykonos in peace in the company of a guide, in a small group or on a private tour.

Rent a scooter. Another possible way for visiting Mykonos is by scooter. Like the car, you can rent a scooter for a few hours or even a day, or several.
6. The Cyclades: which other islands to visit in Greece?
The Cyclades are the most famous Greek islands. In total, the Cyclades include about 250 islands, islets and rock islets. In addition to Mykonos, there are other islands whose name you have probably already heard. Here is a short list!

- Milos: a very pretty island in the Cyclades, still relatively untouristy compared to
- Santorini or Mykonos (read our blog post: Visit Milos)
It is mission impossible to visit the main islands of the Cyclades in just one week. But you can visit in 7 days at least 2 islands.
7. How to get to Mykonos Island?
In direct flight. You can go to the island of Mykonos with direct flights, but currently there are few destinations from which this option is possible.
Flight with stopover. Most often, the stopover is in Athens, the capital of Greece. By plane, from Athens, it takes 40 minutes to go to Mykonos.
By plane + boat. If you want to visit Mykonos, but also other islands, the most interesting thing is to fly to Athens and then take a ferry from Athens (Port of Piraeus). The ferry ride is 3 to 5 hours. The islands are most easily accessible by boat. On the other hand, beware of seasickness for some.
Visiting Athens in 1 or 2 days is possible! If you arrive in Mykonos via Athens, you can take the opportunity to spend a day or two in Athens. Find all the useful information in our blog article: Discover Athens.
8. When to go to visit Mykonos?
Tourist season. The best time for visiting Mykonos is from April to October, as this is the time when you can swim. The summer months are the most popular months, especially July and August. If you want to visit Mykonos during this period, be aware that accommodation prices are rather high. It is also recommended to book tickets and accommodation in advance, in order to have more choices.
Out of season. It is of course also possible to visit Mykonos and the Cyclades outside the high tourist season. On the other hand, for swimming, nothing is guaranteed. The rainiest months are December, January and February.
Good to know! In August, there is Meltem, on the island of Mykonos, but also on the Cyclades in general. The Meltem is a wind that can reach up to 50km/h.
Visiting Mykonos, or one or more islands of the Cyclades, is one of the essential things to do in Greece. It is a perfect destination for holidays with friends, but also as a couple or with family!
