1. Best neighborhoods to stay in Amsterdam (and what to avoid)
What are the best areas to stay in Amsterdam? The city of Amsterdam can be divided into 8 large neighborhoods. Here is the description of each of these neighborhoods with their nice places.
1.1 Binnenstad: staying in the historic center of Old Amsterdam
Binnenstad is the heart of the historic neighborhood of Amsterdam. During your trip to Amsterdam, you will definitely come here to walk around. So why not take direct accommodation here? It is clear that this is one of the most touristic areas of the city. Its advantage is therefore its central location, and in particular its proximity to Amsterdam station. On the other hand, its disadvantage is its very touristic and not very authentic side. For example, Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal is a wide and busy street to be avoided especially for noise. We found that the choice of hotels was not the best with a rather average value for money.
A-Train Hotel: one of the best hotels in this part of the city of Amsterdam in terms of value for money. It is located right in front of Amsterdam Central Station and only 10 minutes walk from Dam Square. This is a good place to stay in Amsterdam near the train station with a fair price for Amsterdam.
Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam: if you are looking for more comfort and a 4-star hotel near Amsterdam Station, this hotel might be for you. The rooms are spacious and tastefully decorated.
1.2 Red Light District: the most dangerous neighborhood in Amsterdam to avoid?
The Red Light District of Amsterdam, also called De Wallen or The Red Light District, is the neighborhood where you can see the famous windows of one of the oldest trades in the world. It is also in this area that there are many coffee shops. In general, this is clearly not the neighborhood that we visit with children.
Neighborhood to avoid in Amsterdam? Due to its reputation, the Red Light District is often considered a dangerous neighborhood of the capital. However, this is not really the case, as there are a lot of police patrols in this part of the city. We still do not recommend staying in this area, if you do not come to Amsterdam precisely for its windows. However, it is one of the most visited areas of the city, despite the fact that it may put some travelers at ease. It is at nightfall that the red lights come on, and you can really discover this neighborhood and its very special atmosphere.
1.3 Grand Canals: ideal area to stay in Amsterdam for couples
If you want to visit Amsterdam for its canals, the Grand Canals area is ideal! This is where you can feel all the charm of the city of Amsterdam. It is therefore quite naturally a perfect area to stay in Amsterdam for a romantic trip.

Grocery stores, flea markets, pleasant and relaxed atmosphere: this is what awaits you in the Jordaan neighborhood of Amsterdam. Rates are lower than in the central neighborhood.

1.6 Museum: ideal neighborhood for art & culture lovers
It is in this part of the city of Amsterdam that the most famous museums of the city are located such as Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Even if this neighborhood is further away from the historic heart of Amsterdam, it is still worth considering when choosing your accommodation, especially if you want to visit these two museums. Also, fares in this part of Amsterdam are lower.
